FC Cincinnati defender Yerson Mosquera has been named to the MLS Team of the Matchday for Matchday 6, the league announced Monday. The honor is the first of Mosquera’s career, and he is the first FCC player to be named among the defensive starters on the league’s weekly team since Matt Miazga in Week 26 last season.

Additionally, Álvaro Barreal was named to the Team of the Matchday’s bench.

Mosquera became the 36th different goal scorer in FC Cincinnati’s MLS history Saturday night with his first career MLS goal against Inter Miami CF five minutes into first half stoppage time. His 45+5’ near-post header off a corner kick beat Miami goalkeeper Drake Callender and sent the Orange and Blue into the break with a 1-0 lead.

The 21-year-old Colombian was also key in FC Cincinnati’s preservation of the one-goal lead and FCC’s fourth clean sheet of the season. Mosquera led all FCC players in tackles (6), won tackles (3) and interceptions (4). His 10 won duels and three aerial duels won led all players on the field Saturday night.

Mosquera’s game-winning goal was the latest first half goal in club history.

Álvaro Barreal’s bench spot on the Team of the Matchday is his second-career weekly honor (2022, Week 24). Barreal provided the game-winning assist with his in-swinging corner kick on Mosquera’s goal.

Barreal created a team-high five chances and led all FCC players in touches (84) and total passes (48).

Mosquera and Barreal’s naming to the MLS Team of the Matchday is the seventh and eighth recognitions of an FC Cincinnati player on the weekly team this season. A full list of 2023 FC Cincinnati weekly honors:
