Forward Rey Ortiz selected in second round of 2020 MLS SuperDraft

CINCINNATI – FC Cincinnati selected University of Portland forward Rey Ortiz with the No. 29 overall selection in the 2020 MLS SuperDraft. Ortiz was FCC’s only selection in the first and second rounds. The Orange and Blue entered the day with just one selection, as they traded the No. 3 overall selection to Inter Miami CF in exchange for $150,000 in General Allocation Money on Nov. 19, 2019.


MLS SuperDraft Second Round Summary:


·       Selected forward Rey Ortiz from the University of Portland with the No. 29 pick overall


Ortiz played four seasons at the University of Portland (2016-19), playing 64 games and recording 50 starts. The Acapulco, Mexico native scored 14 goals and added 26 assists in his career with the Pilots. The forward was named to the 2019 All-West Coast Conference First Team and the 2019 United Soccer Coaches All-West Region Second Team.


An LA Galaxy Youth Academy product, Ortiz made a pair of appearances with LA Galaxy II during the 2015 USL Championship season.


FC Cincinnati have one remaining selection in the 2020 MLS SuperDraft – No. 53 overall. FCC acquired the No. 53 overall selection from Inter Miami CF in exchange for Victor Ulloa on Nov. 11, 2019. The third and fourth rounds of the SuperDraft will take place on Monday, Jan. 13.


The Orange and Blue traded their natural third-round selection (No. 55 overall) to Vancouver Whitecaps FC in exchange for goalkeeper Spencer Richey on Dec. 9, 2018. Additionally, FC Cincinnati traded their natural fourth-round selection (No. 81 overall) to the LA Galaxy in exchange for the Homegrown Rights of defender Zico Bailey on Dec. 12, 2019.


FC Cincinnati will return to the field for their second MLS season on Sunday, March 1, when the team opens the season in Harrison, N.J., against the New York Red Bulls. After a road game at Atlanta United FC on Saturday, March 7, FCC will open its 2020 home slate on Saturday, March 14, when the team hosts D.C. United at Nippert Stadium in a 5:30 p.m. game. Season Ticket Memberships are still available for purchase and start at $230 per ticket. A 2020 Season Ticket Membership also secures fans’ place on the club’s priority list, which will be utilized when sales begin in the new West End Stadium for the 2021 season.
