FC Cincinnati hit the road this week and take on New York City Football Club at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday night for the first midweek match of the MLS season in 2026. The trip to the Bronx is the first for FCC since 2023 and marks an opportunity to get back in the winners circle at the famed venue.

The ball rolls back at 7:30 Wednesday night on Apple TV. Ahead of that let’s look at a few key stories to keep an eye on as The Orange and Blue look to earn all three points in The House that Ruth Built.

Between the Foul Poles

No, Wednesday night's game is not taking place between the foul lines, but the awkward baseball stadium configuration always makes for an interesting match as the tight corridors on the field means a narrow pitch for the match.

The unique dimensions at Yankee Stadium, forced due to the available playing surface on the baseball field, are not new to NYCFC matches; they play on them for all home games between Yankee Stadium and Citi Field (home of the New York Mets). But they are standalone in Major League Soccer otherwise as field dimensions in New York are the narrowest in MLS by far.

FC Cincinnati is more than familiar with the challenge those dimensions create and how games can change based on the tight confines. The Orange and Blue have played NYCFC six times between Yankee Stadium and Citi Field, owning a 1-4-1 record in those matches.

“I think there's not a lot of holes when you watch them as far as the games we've analyzed, to break them down,” FC Cincinnati Head Coach Pat Noonan said Tuesday before the match. “We focused more on the games on the baseball fields, because it looks a little different. So, while structurally things might look the same, how the speed of play looks and pressure is going to arrive quicker, you have to be better on one and two touches.”

Evander’s momentum and his chance at history

FC Cincinnati’s star midfielder, Evander, had been shut out from goal so far this season…until last Saturday when the Brazilian star stepped to the spot and fired home a penalty kick.

That first goal of the season helped kickstart a comeback where the Orange and Blue earned a draw after being down 3-1. More importantly, all in the FC Cincinnati ecosystem, including Evander himself, are hoping that goal helps to get him back into the typical goalscoring form he’s been known for, and can help FCC break out of this difficult start to the season.

After seven matches without a goal to start the MLS season, and eleven across all competitions, it was clear the goal drought Evander had been going through was getting to him. While he wasn’t necessarily letting it affect his play, with each missed opportunity to log his first goal of 2026 his reactions would get more expressive. Which came to a head Saturday against Chicago when the two-time MLS MVP finalist was saved on a very dangerous curling shot to the far post, and Evander, frustrated, pounded his fist multiple times on the turf.

Now though, with the drought snapped, Evander and FC Cincinnati are hoping lifted weight off his shoulders will open the flood gates.

It also sets up his next finish as historic. With the PK scored in the 79 minute, Evander registered his 43rd goal in MLS action across his time with Portland Timbers and FC Cincinnati. That ties Evander with Wélton, who played in MLS from 1996 to 2000, for the most goals in league history by a Brazilian player – meaning the midfielder's next goal for FC Cincinnati will elevate him to stand alone as the greatest Brazilian scorer in MLS history.

(Possible) USMNT Showdown

Between the pipes at Yankee Stadium is setting up to be a dual of US Men’s National Team goalkeepers with aspirations of playing at the FIFA World Cup later this summer.

FC Cincinnati goalkeeper, Roman Celentano, has been a common selection of late, but missed out on a pair of friendlies due to an injury earlier this season. NYCFC keeper, Matt Freese, is also a common selection by USMNT Head Coach Mauricio Pochettino, and started one of the matches they played in the recent March window, allowing two goals in a 2-0 loss to Portugal at Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.

The outcome of this match, and any kind of head-to-head showdown between the keepers is really only a data point for any kind of national team selections, but it is worth monitoring how this game could feature two of the three American keepers taken to the biggest tournament in the world.
