Matt Miazga, Brandon Vazquez named to USMNT roster for 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup

call-up-1920x1080 (7)

FC Cincinnati defender Matt Miazga and forward Brandon Vazquez were selected among the final 23-man roster for the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup. The USMNT’s third match in Group A will be on Sunday, July 2 against Trinidad and Tobago at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina (7 p.m. ET | FOX | Univision).

The Stars and Stripes will seek a record-tying eighth confederation championship this summer, having won the most recent Gold Cup held in 2021.

Miazga’s inclusion is his third in a USMNT roster for the Gold Cup (2017, 2019). The Clifton, New Jersey native’s lone international goal in 23-career caps came in the 2017 Gold Cup Group Stage as part of a 3-0 win over Nicaragua in Cleveland.

Most recently for the USMNT, Miazga came off the bench and played 20 minutes in the Continental Clásico against Mexico on April 19.

Vazquez’s naming to the USMNT roster is his first in Gold Cup competition. He has made three senior appearances for the national team after he received his first call-up in the USMNT January Training Camp this past winter. By starting for the Stars and Stripes in an international friendly against Serbia on Jan. 25, 2023, and scoring the game’s opening goal in the 29th minute, he became the first active player in FC Cincinnati club history to both appear and score for the USMNT.

Vazquez also started and played 64 minutes in the Continental Clásico against Mexico on April 19.

Should the United States Men’s National Team advance to the Knockout Stage by finishing in first or second place out of Group A, FC Cincinnati’s TQL Stadium will host Miazga and Vazquez and the USMNT on Sunday, July 9.

Sixteen of the 23 players named to the United States Gold Cup roster come from Major League Soccer. With two selections each, FC Cincinnati and Seattle Sounders lead the list of 12 MLS teams represented on the roster. Players also join from clubs in England (2), Italy (2), Mexico (2) and the Netherlands (1).
