Lavelle: "Spain is a great opponent"

Cincinnati native Rose Lavelle and the U.S. Women’s National Team continue their quest for a second straight FIFA World Cup title on Monday when they play Spain in the Round of 16.

Discussing the matchup, Lavelle told reporters in France that this is a new opportunity for the USWNT after they barreled through group stage play with three wins and outscoring opponents by a 18-0 margin.

“This is like a whole new tournament,” Lavelle said. “What we did the last three games doesn’t really matter. It’s all about this game and we really can’t look ahead of it because Spain is a great opponent and they’re going to give us a great game.”

Lavelle played twice for the national team in the group stage and scored twice in the 13-0 win against Thailand.

Kickoff against Spain is at noon ET, and FC Cincinnati will host a World Cup Watch Party at Fountain Square that’s free and open to the public. The game will be televised live on FS1.
