Lavelle shines in World Cup debut, record win

Lavelle

Cincinnati native Rose Lavelle scored twice in her FIFA Women’s World Cup debut as the U.S. Women’s National Team earned a record-setting 13-0 win over Thailand in the American’s first match in France. No other team in men’s or women’s World Cup history scored 13 goals.

Lavelle started and played 57 minutes before being substituted. During her performance, she scored the U.S.’ second and seventh goals, coming in the 20th and 56th minutes, respectively.

Her first came she received a ball from Alex Morgan – who herself scored five goals. Lavelle controlled it, then sent a 20-yard shot to the back post. Her second goal arrived when Sam Mewis crossed the ball to an open Lavelle, who first-timed it into the net.

The Americans scored 10 second-half goals after staking themselves to a 3-0 lead at the break.

As for the USWNT, they move to first in the Group F standings ahead of Sweden, Chile and Thailand. The U.S. play Chile on Sunday in their second group stage match. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. ET and the game will be televised live on FOX.

FC Cincinnati will be co-hosting official watch parties at Fountain Square downtown with 3CDC, and at Molly Malone’s in Covington in partnership with the Cincy chapter of the American Outlaws.
