The FC Cincinnati Academy Under-17 team spent last weekend in Lakewood Ranch, Fla., playing in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Winter Showcase. The Under-17’s returned to Cincinnati with a 0-1-2 record after a 2-2 draw with Vancouver Whitecaps FC, a 1-0 loss to D.C. United and a 2-2 draw with Charlotte Soccer Academy.

After being denied by Vancouver’s goalkeeper on multiple breakaways, Cincinnati broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute. Arquimides Ordonez (Fort Thomas, Ky.) played the ball over to Manuel Gutierrez (Cincinnati, Ohio) behind the Whitecaps’ backline, and Gutierrez beat the goalkeeper to give the Orange and Blue the lead. Ordonez doubled the lead for FCC in the 39th minute when he collected the ball and slotted his shot from 20 yards out. Muslim Umar scored for Vancouver in the 60th minute, placing his shot to the far post, before Joshue Ndakala found the equalizer in the 73rd minute. Although Garrett Borgman (Crestwood, Ky.) had made the initial save, Ndkala capitalized off the rebound.

Near the end of the first half, D.C. United got on the scoresheet with the game’s lone goal. As the Orange and Blue attempted to play out of the back, an errant pass from the backline lead to D.C.’s goal in the 40th minute. Edwin Henriquez collected the ball in front of the goal and slotted it in for D.C.’s lone goal. Cincinnati tried for the equalizer in the second half, but the club’s attempts fell short.

The Orange and Blue conceded right before the halftime break when Mika Habel scored to give Charlotte Soccer Academy the lead in the 42nd minute. FCC came out to a fast start in the second half and applied heavy pressure and finally converted when Arnel Miscic cut a ball back to Ordonez, who dribbled past two defenders before slotting the ball past Charlotte’s goalkeeper. Charlotte took the lead in the 64th minute thanks to a John Trucillo goal, but in the 81st, Ordonez scored his second of the game and knotted the score. William Bernard lofted a cross over Charlotte’s backline to Ordonez to start the play, before Ordonez volleyed it.
