FC Cincinnati 2/Matchup Notes
The matchup – Sunday’s match will be the second meeting of a three match season series between FCC 2 and Red Bull II. Red Bull II earned three points in a 3-1 home win on April 19 at MSU Soccer Park. Cheikhou Niang sent the teams into the break tied at 1-1, but two second half goals from New York saw the hosts walk away with the win.
Back in the goals – Niang found himself back on the scoresheet Sunday night against Inter Miami CF II in what proved the winner for the Orange and Blue. The goal against Miami marks Niang’s third of the season and his first since netting against Red Bull II back in April. Niang is one goal shy of Stefan Chirila for a team lead in the category.
Another shutout – FCC 2 picked up their third shutout performance of the season against Miami in the 1-0 win. The performance is the first shutout since early May when the Orange and Blue defeated Toronto FC II 5-0. FC Cincinnati Academy goalkeeper Connor Dale earned his first clean sheet of his MLSNP career and made two save in the result.
Defending home turf – The Orange and Blue have picked up all four wins this season at Scudamore Field. FCC 2 have scored in six of their eight matches at home and are allowing just over a goal per match at the home venue.
Scouting Red Bull New York II
Record: 9-4-3 (31 points)
Standings: 3rd, Eastern Conference
Last Three: 5-0 win vs Philadelphia Union II | 5-0 win vs Toronto FC II | 2-1 loss at New England Revolution II
Head Coach: Dominik Wohlert
Leading Scorer: 5 – Dennis Nelich
The defending MLS NEXT Pro Cup champions are among the league’s elite once again, sitting fifth in the overall table. Red Bull New York II are third in the Eastern Conference and trail Columbus Crew 2 by just three points with a game in hand. Red Bull enter the weekend following a pair of 5-0 wins against Philadelphia Union II and Toronto FC II.
Red Bull have no shortage of attacking options and rank second in the league in goals scored with 37. Eight players have scored at least three goals for New York, including forward Dennis Nelich who netted a hat trick against Union II in their last match.
Included in that list is first team forwards Dennis Gjengaar, who scored twice against Cincinnati earlier this season, and Roald Mitchell. Of the two, Gjengaar is the more likely to feature this weekend having appeared in 13 games for the second team. Gjengaar also leads the team in assists with six.
And while New York has historically found success in throwing numbers forward and outscoring teams to earn points, the defensive side of the ball has been equally impressive this year. After allowing two goals per game a season ago, New York have cut that number to 1.4 through 16 games played.
Defenders Aimar Modelo and Aimar Sanchez have anchored the improved Red Bull back line with the pair accounting for 28 appearances this season and over 2,000 minutes played through the first half of the year.
